- Inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, 1992.
- Father of Ken Norton Jr. (born 26-Sep-1966), a linebacker with the San Francisco 49ers, and Keith Norton, a sports reporter with KPRC-TV Channel 2 in Houston, Texas.
- Inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame, 1989.
- Served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1963 to 1967 where he boxed on the Marine Corps boxing team. He compiled a record of 24-2 with 22 knockouts and won three All-Marine Heavyweight titles.
