- He is the son of the Scottish director Gordon Flemyng, who mainly worked in television but is also known for directing the two Doctor Who (1963) cinema films made during the 1960s starring Peter Cushing, Dr. Who and the Daleks (1965) and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. (1966).
- It took eight hours to put him into the prosthetic suit for his role as Mr. Hyde in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) and three hours to take the suit off.
- He attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
- He is part-owner of The Duchess Bar in Battersea, London.
- He played the protagonist's father in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), despite being almost three years younger than Brad Pitt.
